What is a Death Doula?
Facing the end of life can be an overwhelming and emotional experience for both individuals and their loved ones. Grief with Hope's Death Doula Services provide compassionate, non-medical support to individuals approaching the end of life and to the families walking alongside them.
Our Death Doulas offer a calming and supportive presence while helping individuals and families navigate the emotional, practical, and personal aspects of the dying process. Support may include companionship, helping families understand and prepare for the end-of-life journey, facilitating meaningful conversations, identifying personal wishes, creating legacy or remembrance activities, and providing emotional support to loved ones before and immediately following a death.
Death Doula services are designed to complement—not replace—hospice, medical care, or other professional services. Our role is to provide additional comfort, guidance, advocacy, and human connection during a time that can often feel uncertain or overwhelming.
Every person's end-of-life journey is unique. Our goal is to honor each individual's wishes, values, culture, and relationships while helping families create an environment centered around dignity, comfort, connection, and love.
No family should have to navigate the end-of-life journey alone. Grief with Hope is here to walk alongside you.
Doula Services
-
Our Death Doulas provide compassionate emotional support to both the individual approaching the end of life and the family and loved ones surrounding them. We offer a calm, supportive presence where fears, concerns, questions, and emotions can be expressed openly and without judgment.
We also help families better understand what they may experience as their loved one approaches the end of life. Our Death Doulas can provide education about common signs and changes that may occur during the natural dying process, helping families understand what may be expected and when a change or concern should be brought to the attention of the individual's hospice or medical care team.
While Death Doulas do not diagnose conditions or provide medical care, we can help families feel more informed and prepared for what may come. Our goal is to reduce uncertainty, encourage meaningful communication, and provide a comforting presence so families can focus on what matters most—being present with their loved one and one another.

Legacy work provides individuals approaching the end of life with an opportunity to reflect on their story, celebrate meaningful relationships, and leave something personal behind for the people they love. Our Death Doulas can help individuals and families explore meaningful ways to preserve memories, traditions, values, and messages for future generations.
Legacy activities are personalized to each individual's wishes and may include creating memory books or boxes, writing letters to loved ones, recording stories or messages, organizing photographs, documenting family traditions or recipes, creating keepsakes, or preparing special gifts for future milestones. Sometimes legacy work is as simple as having meaningful conversations and helping someone share the stories they want their family to remember.
Our Death Doulas help guide these activities at a pace that feels comfortable and meaningful for the individual and their family. There is no right or wrong way to create a legacy—the goal is to honor the person's life, relationships, and unique story.
A life leaves an impact long after it ends. Legacy work helps preserve that connection and gives loved ones something meaningful to carry forward.

After-Death Navigation
The days following the death of a loved one can feel overwhelming. While grieving, families are often faced with unfamiliar decisions, paperwork, phone calls, arrangements, and responsibilities that can be difficult to navigate alone. Our After-Death Navigation services provide compassionate guidance and practical support to help families understand what comes next.
Our Death Doulas can help families identify and organize important next steps, including navigating mortuary and funeral arrangements, obtaining death certificates, organizing important documents, identifying agencies or organizations that may need to be notified, locating community resources, and creating a plan for completing time-sensitive responsibilities.
We can also help families understand which tasks may need immediate attention and which can wait, helping make an overwhelming process feel more manageable. When legal, financial, medical, or other specialized assistance is needed, our Death Doulas can help connect families with the appropriate professionals and resources.
Our role is not to replace funeral professionals, attorneys, financial advisors, or other licensed professionals. Instead, we provide a supportive presence to help families stay organized, understand their options, ask questions, and navigate the practical responsibilities that follow a death.
You deserve time to grieve. Let us help you navigate what comes next.

Flexible, expert advice when you need it. Book hourly support across a range of topics—from planning to problem-solving. This focused consultation will help clarify your goals, map out next steps, and identify opportunities for growth.
The Process
Free Consultation
Every family's needs are different, which is why our process begins with a free consultation. This initial conversation gives our Death Doula an opportunity to learn more about you, your loved one, and your current situation—whether your loved one is approaching the end of life or has already passed.
During the consultation, we will listen to your needs, answer questions, discuss any immediate concerns, and learn how we can best support you and your family. We will also review our menu of Death Doula services, explain what each service includes, and walk you through what you can expect throughout the process.
There is no obligation to continue services after the consultation. Our goal is to provide a comfortable first conversation where you can learn about your options, ask questions, and determine what level of support feels right for you and your family.
It starts with a conversation. We're here to listen, answer your questions, and help you understand what comes next.
Intake & End-of-Life Planning
After the initial consultation, the next step is completing our intake and End-of-Life Plan. This process allows our Death Doula to better understand the wishes, priorities, and individual needs of the person approaching the end of life, as well as the needs of their family and loved ones.
Together, we will review the services available and identify the areas where support is most meaningful. Our Death Doula will complete routine intake paperwork, discuss personal preferences and goals, and use our End-of-Life Plan to create an individualized approach to services.
Based on the individual's wishes, we will begin planning future sessions and identifying the support they would like to receive. This may include emotional support, end-of-life education, legacy work, family support, planning and preparation, or other services that are meaningful to the individual.
The person receiving services remains at the center of the planning process. Their voice, values, traditions, and wishes guide the support we provide, allowing each experience to be as personal and meaningful as the life being honored.
Continued Support & After-Death Care
Our support does not end when a loved one passes. As the end-of-life journey progresses, our Death Doula will continue providing the services identified in the individual's personalized plan while remaining responsive to the changing needs of the individual and their family.
Following the death of a loved one, we will reconnect with the family to provide compassionate support and help determine what assistance may still be needed. This may include After-Death Navigation, guidance with next steps and paperwork, connections to mortuary or community resources, and support during the early stages of grief.
When Death Doula services come to an end, families will also be provided information about Grief with Hope's ongoing grief support services and other community resources that may be helpful. Families are always welcome to reconnect with us when additional support is needed.
Our goal is to ensure that families feel supported not only through the end-of-life journey, but also as they begin navigating life after loss.
